photo.net
News Editor

Application deadline: None specified
Posted: February 14, 2007

New Media posting

photo.net, established in 1993, is looking for a paid news editor, who
would also be a moderator of the News forum. This would be a great job for
someone recently graduated from journalism school who also has a passion
for photography. You need a good writer with a moderate knowledge of the
photo world and the nuts and bolts of camera equipment.

What kind of news do we want?

    * new product announcements (cameras, lenses, memory cards, film,
tripods, cases)
    * important new photography books released
    * museum and gallery shows in cities around the world (you'll have to
select the ones that matter)
    * awards granted to individual photographers or organizations (at a
minimum, the Pulitzer Prizes)
    * movies and plays with a photography theme
    * industry hirings and restructurings, e.g., a famous lens designer
moves to a new company, big layoffs at a film manufacturer, or Minolta
sells its camera division to Sony
    * interesting newspaper and magazine articles published elsewhere on
the Internet

What does the job entail?

    * Keeping up with manufacturers' Web sites and press releases
    * Reading other photography Web sites and news sites, including
subscribing to RSS feeds
    * Being judicious and selective; we want about 10 important news items
per day
    * Having a point of view, being able to write a two-paragraph summary
explaining the significance of a manufacturer's press release putting the
announcement into context for our audience of advanced amateurs and
professional photographers

We are going to modify our software so that this forum will display more
like a Weblog. At least the first paragraph of every article will appear
on the index page.

Example Web sites that do news pretty well and how we want to be
different:

    * http://www.topix.net/arts/photography (too many articles, not enough
point of view)
    * www.dpreview.com (all about equipment; too much coverage of point
and shoot digital cameras; only about 1 out of 10 models are interested or
innovative)
    * Photo District News (too oriented toward
professional/working/commercial photographers)

Every day, your job would consist of the following:

   1. check RSS feeds
   2. check manufacturer and cultural organization Web sites for press
releases (this can be automated with various tools that will watch sites
for you)
   3. check other photo news sites to see what they're writing about (but
of course we don't copy them because we have a different audience)
   4. summarize, link, copy in press releases as attachments
   5. moderate user-submitted news to make sure that it is up to the
standards of interest of what you're producing
   6. moderate reader comments on previously submitted news, deleting any
that aren't productive or are inconsistent with our site's mission and
Terms of Use

Once you're up to speed with the software and the industry, we estimate
that this will take approximately 20 minutes per article. That makes it a
3.5-hour/day job, 7 days/week. Salary will be in the neighborhood of
$20,000 per year, depending on experience.

Advantages of working for photo.net:

    * your articles will be read by at least 1000 people every day
    * if you're in Boston, you can hang out with our circle of friends,
use the photo studio that we're putting together, go on helicopter rides.
