The International Reporting Project (IRP) is accepting applications for 15
fellowships for journalists to attend this expenses-paid reporting
workshop called "Covering Homeland Security: Does the System Work to Stop
Terror?" in Washington, DC at The Johns Hopkins University's School of
Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
The workshop is one of the McCormick Tribune Foundation's Specialized
Reporting Institutes. These intensive journalism workshops provide
practical reporting training in timely, specialized topics of importance
to professional journalists.
From May 21 to May 23, participants convene n Washington to examine the
performances of the agencies primarily responsible for deterring,
detecting and responding to terrorist threats against the United States in
the post-9/11 era. The 3-day workshop explains to participating
journalists how the different agencies interact, how they have responded
to recent challenges and what weaknesses need to be addressed. Journalists
meet with senior U.S. government officials from agencies such as the CIA,
FBI, Department of Homeland Security, members of Congress and their
staffs, scholars, private-sector experts and Washington-based journalists
who cover these issues regularly.
Participants receive roundtrip air fare to Washington and free hotel
accommodations in Washington during the workshop.

The Jon Davidoff Scholarships for Journalists, offered by the Wesleyan
Writers Conference. recognizes journalists of unusual promise or talent.
The winners attend the Wesleyan Writers Conference (June 17-22), where
they work with a faculty of distinguished journalists, fiction writers,
and poets, and with an international group of participants.
In 2007 the Conference celebrates its 51st year. The 2007 journalism
faculty includes the distinguished writers Jonathan Schell, Katha Pollitt,
and George Packer. Other faculty includes Edward P. Jones, Gayle
Pemberton, Jennifer Gonnerman, and Honor Moore, along with editors,
agents, and many other speakers.
The scholarship offers writers the opportunity for careful critique of
their work as well as the chance to expand their understanding of

funded jointly by the university and the Freedom Forum, a national
foundation that operates the Al Neuharth Media Center on USD‰?Ts campus in

semester in the Department of Contemporary Media and Journalism, advising
The Volante student media staff, advising the Society of Professional
Journalists student chapter, overseeing journalism scholarship programs

diversity programs of the Freedom Fourm, including its American Indian
