1. JOURNALISM JOBS:
Las Vegas Sun
Copy editor
Las Vegas
Application deadline: None specified
Posted: April 1, 2007
Newspapers & Wire Services posting
The Las Vegas Sun is reinventing itself. We're devoting ourselves to
enterprise, analysis and investigative stories. We're reinventing our
headlines, too. We want creative, fresh, provocative heads -- more like
those in magazines than in newspapers. We're taking chances, and we're
looking for copy editors to help step up our game.
THE JOB: We typically work from noon to 8 p.m., with limited weekend
shifts. We have a circulation of 180,000 on weekdays and more than 200,000
on Sundays. The Sun offers competitive wages, good benefits and a great
work setting. We're owned by a well-established local family that's
investing in the paper and the community. We've recruited journalists
who've worked at papers including the L.A. Times, Washington Post, San
Jose Mercury News, Seattle Times and Dallas Morning News. If you join us,
you'll help build a stronger paper every day, instead of fighting to keep
quality from eroding. We work at a pace that lets us do quality editing.
We're a friendly bunch and are excited about transforming the paper into a
publication unique in U.S. journalism.
THE LIFESTYLE: Las Vegas has much more than the Strip. We have nice
neighborhoods, housing prices within reach, lots of sunshine (four months
are hot, and that's what air-conditioning is for). We also have
world-class restaurants, shopping and golfing, and headlining
entertainment. If you like skiing, hiking or water sports, we have Mount
Charleston and Lake Mead. If you like to travel, Las Vegas has flights all
the time, to everywhere, and they don't get snowed in.

Posted: March 31, 2007
Television posting
Palette Pictures, a production company based in Los Angeles, is producing
a 14-episode documentary series about the lives of Chinese foreign
students in America for China Central Television (CCTV), the largest
television network in China.
For the Bay Area episodes, we are looking for Directors, DPs and
Production Sound Mixers. DPs must have a 24p camera, preferably the
Panasonic DVX100A/B. Production Sound Mixers must have their own gear,
preferably a boom, mixer and 2 wireless microphones.
This is a low budget project, but the filmmakers' work will be viewed by
millions of viewers internationally. This will be the first series of its
kind, attempting to provide faithful, first-hand representations of the
students' everyday lives; exploring the successes and struggles of fitting
into a foreign society, being away from home, and pursuing their dreams in
an engaging manner.

North Coast Journal
Reporter
Humboldt County
Application deadline: 05/10/2007
Posted: April 6, 2007
Newspapers & Wire Services posting
Here's a small sampling of Humboldt County's big stories over the last
year:
A police department serving a town of 25,000 shot four people dead. One of
them was a mentally ill woman, another a 16-year-old boy.
The local billionaire, who recently founded his own newspaper, sued county
government and vowed to see staff members of an entire county department
fired.
A Texas financier bankrupted the county's largest private employer,
leading to an immense, dirty court fight for control of 200,000 acres of
prime redwood forest.
A popular rapper pulled off an "Ocean's Eleven"-style burglary at one of
the local Indian casinos, prompting a month-long interstate manhunt.
Our district attorney was busted for plagiarizing his op-ed columns for a
local daily.
Another elected official was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being
convicted of running a large-scale marijuana farm.
The North Coast Journal, an alt-weekly that serves one of the oddest
places in America, is seeking a hard-working, ambitious investigative
reporter to delve deep into stories like these. We'll pay you a living
wage. But more importantly, we're offering you the time and space to do
the kind of deep, meaningful work most every journalist dreams of doing --
long-form, narrative pieces backed up by solid reporting. Right now, we
need someone with an affinity for hard news: politics, government,
business, crime.
Humboldt County is a fantastic place to live. It's home to a state
university, and all of the shops and services that go along with it. The
music scene is bustling, with dozens and dozens of local bands of every
imaginable genre and talent level. It's got three or four human-scale,
walkable cities with unique and beautiful architecture. If you're at all
outdoorsy, you'll be in paradise -- the hiking, biking, camping, surfing
and kayaking are all prime. (In winter, it's just a short trip to the
snow; in summer, it's just a short trip to the river.)
It's also a strange and endlessly interesting place, with a
news-per-capita ratio that will blow your mind. We're home to the two
largest Native American tribes in California. We've got a large and
growing Latino population. The entire county is poised on the cusp of
great economic and cultural change, with the old extractive industries
(timber, fishing) dying out, and no one quite sure what will take their
place. The media scene here has no parallel: In a county with a population
of around 130,000, we have 11 newspapers, five public radio stations and
countless commercial ones, television news, a lively and contentious
blogosphere.
We do good work at the North Coast Journal. Our reporters have been cited
by the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional
Journalists (James Madison Freedom of Information Award); the Casey
Journalism Center (Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism); and the
California Health Endowment (Health Journalism Fellowship), among others.
We routinely clean the competition's clock in the annual California
Newspaper Publishers Association's "Better Newspapers Contest."
The job starts June 1.
