How to Take This Course A Web course differs from regular classes in several ways. For one thing, you can work at your own pace -- within certain parameters. Since you don't have to show up in a classroom at a set time, you can work on the material whenever you have access to a computer -- weekends, nights, mornings ... you name it! The schedule is flexible. Of course, that puts extra responsibility on you. You'll have to use self-discipline to complete the assignments and take the exams. If you wait too late, you'll find yourself with too much left to do before the end of the session. In addition, some assignments require monitoring a resource for several days. You will have to start early enough to allow at least that many days before the deadline. See the course outline for deadlines for completion of work for various sections. You will also have to take the initiative to contact me if you have questions or problems related to this course. If you are on the Louisiana Tech campus, you can come by the journalism office in the basement of Keeny Hall (Room 152). If you are a true distance learner taking the course somewhere away from Ruston, you can e-mail me at blick@latech.edu or call me at 318-257-4427. You can even fax me a message at 318-257-4558. A request: Since it began, this course has been a work in progress. Creating these Web pages has been like forming a giant fishing net from individual bits of string. I have tried to make sure all of the knots are tied securely, but some errors may have slipped through. Besides, considering the nature of the Internet, some of the external links that were valid when I last checked them may not work now. If you discover an invalid link or some other problem, please notify me (blick@latech.edu) so that I can deal with the error. I will appreciate your help. Progressing through the course: Each page on this Web site provides a navigation bar similar to the one at the left of this page. A link appears for each main section, and within the current section you will find links to subdivisions of that section. The current section and subsection should appear in bold type. Precautions about submissions for grades: 1) Type your name at the top of each homework assignment and exam. I can't always remember which e-mail address belongs to which student. 2) Save a copy of each submission. If I don't receive the first one you send, you will need a backup copy to send the material again. |
